Rip's, The Sweet Shop, Katie Holmes

Posted by: (The Prep & College Shop) - 10/22/2009

As a 27 year resident of Rye, I recently visited my home town. There was a time I could say hello to 50 people between the train station and the library. Purchase Street in the 50s,60,70s had a sense of neighbor - even joy. Now there are few if any "local merchants." This has contributed to a sense of dull or soullessness.BRBRIf I were Mayor, I'd give tax breaks to townspeople who own and operate locally with the objective of bringing the good vibrations back.BRHere's to Mrs. Cox, Katie Holmes, Kalenskys, Butler Brothers, The Shumans, Rip, Roger - The Sweet Shop, The Colonial Inn, Gristede's, Cristfield's, Mahrony Brothers, The Light House Book Store, Mayfair Deli, The Potted Palm, The Sports Loft, The Hagels, O'Dells Hardware, Vinnie at JD's, The Little Club, The Rye Fish Market, Morano's Florist, Miss Byrd at the Library, The Children's Dream House, Harry Egner at Regency Music, The Rye Smoke Shop, Rocky at The Card Mart, Mike's Bike Shop, Davis Brothers, The Porto's Rye Camera Shop......so many happy souls!BR

(Fred Pazona) As a teenager in the 60's, I worked at Playland, Rye Sunoco, in college, hanging out at the Beachcomber, and working between semesters for Jimmy Fitz's father at Interstate Concrete. Back then in Rye, everybody knew everyone, and said hello. I moved, but being a runner, I came back to run the Rye Derby in the 90's and the last time in 2001. Hardly saw anyone I could remember.

Journalism?

Posted by: (20rye09) - 7/25/2007

Can someone please explain why pictures of what SEEM to be a private birthday party for Mr. Bill Gedale appear in this most recent Rye Record? BRBRUnless there is something not explained, I do not see any journalistic need for these pictures, of what seem to be a private function at a private club.BRBRCare to explain?

To whom it may concern,

In its 10 years, The Rye Record has featured countless birthday and anniversary celebrations. Yours is the first negative comment we've received on any of them. Readers usually call or write us to tell us how much they enjoyed seeing the photographs.

With all good wishes

Great Article

Posted by: (Martha Knowles) - 7/15/2007

I wanted to say that I just loved Peter's article about losing his wife to the Rye City Council. Great job, Peter!

(20rye09) I would disagree. I thought it, although an opinion piece, poorly written journalistic-ly. While it is very true the meetings are too long, not only was the whole wife-story unnecessary, but in my opinion, as the job of an editor, it is his or her job to attend such meetings, and it's a responsibility that comes with the job and shouldn't be complained about.

On a side note, I noticed that Peter and wife left the most recent meeting during the Flood Update, not even staying for the more important part of the meeting--not the section that had been repeated multiple times at multiple meetings prior.

To whom it may concern,

I think you need to provide your name for our readership. I have no idea which flood meeting you are talking about as I have been to nearly a dozen.

The Editor

(20rye09) Dear Sir,

Anonymousity is a beautiful thing.

However, I refer to the 7/18 meeting. It was a City Council meeting.

I have nothing more to say about this topic. I am a loyal and avid reader and only try to help the paper and make it stronger.

Does anyone know what they were filming in town today? Looked like a commercial with a wedding cake on the back of the bicycle...

Quiet message board.../Colin Marren death

Posted by: (Beth) - 5/29/2007

It's disappointing that more people are not availing themselves of your forum. Missed opportunity.
What about the young Marren fellow who died in his car this weekend? By all accounts, a fine guy - such a loss - and it sort of makes all that parental cautionary tale stuff very vivid, especially at this time of year.

THE Story

4/25/2007

There are times when one issue dominates all others. For our community, that time is now. It is about finding a PERMANENT solution to the problem faced by our friends in Indian Village, our local merchants, the Rye Y and, quite frankly, the entire City of Rye. The Mayor and City Council must take the lead: establish a task force, hire the engineers, understand the problem, raise the money, and fix it.

Flooding is #3 on the agenda at tonight's City Council meeting. The more people who attend, the better.

The Rye Record intends to report on this issue extensively. Note that there is already a citizen's action committee led by Carolina Johnson, who lives in Indian Village.

(Natasha O. Cherny) I am a Village of Mamaroneck resident, 615 First Street, who has endured three devastating floods, each progressively worse than the last, since buying the house in 10/2003. After the last flood, my partner and I began talking to neighbors and began informal exchanges of information regarding flood recovery and flood mitigation. The information exchanges proved so valuable that we formalized the process and began meeting regularly as the Mamaroneck Village Residents Association. Our numbers grew from 7 to 23 in the space of three meetings. We attend all Village Board of Trustee meetings and Planning Board Meetings, and three of us have just been named by the Trustees to the newly formed Citizens Flood Committee. The Associations upcoming agendas include lectures from experts in the fields of flood mitigation, hydrology, water quality, stormwater management, home rule, and community action. One thing has become abundantly clear to us: this is an intermunicipal problem requiring broad cooperation among us all. Our next meeting is Thursday, July 12, 2007, 933 Mamaroneck Avenue, 7:30 p.m.(space generously provided by Assemblyman Latimer). Enter through the rear of the building from the parking lot. We need you and all neighboring community groups to join forces, raise voices, and share knowledge. We hope you will consider attending. Should you have questions or comments, I can be reached at 347-224-7577.

Thanks!

This is a great idea. Thanks for setting it up. Also, I just checked out the other blog sites you have listed on your home page. More news to me...
Thanks for all the storm coverage and the rest of the issue, too. I really didn't expect to see the paper for another couple of weeks - I appreciate you getting it together!
